Thriftshare...

It's a two latte' kind of day today....
This week my Thriftshare is the best kind of thrift...
things I already own
and
one gift!

Let me explain...
My husband and I have been working on emptying
out a storage space we have had for years...
I have decided to let go of a lot
and keep what I really love.
No longer hanging on to things just because they are old or pretty...
Do I really love them?
Will I use them?
Do they have a purpose?

So here are a few things I unearthed
whilst digging through the boxes this weekend.
First is the green enamel pail thingy...
I have no idea what it would be used for
but
I know when I bought it years ago,
I did because it was my favorite shade of green!

The enamel bowl is also a favorite I was glad to finally
find in the pile!
If I can just keep my husband from ruining it in the dishwasher!
We like to eat popcorn out of it
and I often mix up cakes in it.
The yellow striped apron was still in the package!
So out she came and straight into use...
a gal can never have too many aprons right?
My mustached little chef has been found!
Here is perfect example of -
YES
it has a purpose!
I just hope he is handled with care
 by Mr. and Little Keeper.
I have decided if I keep everything in the cabinet what
is the purpose of having it?
Hopefully I will find his little mate -a two sided basket/nut cup.
The little pot with the roses
was a gift from my mom.
She found it last month at a thrift store for 3.98!
I just have to decide what to use it for!?
Lots of my Jadeite collection is coming out now too.
That is one thing I won't tolerate being mis-handled...
Mr.Keeper knows if ANY of it gets broken he might as well go
and sleep in his car...
because he will have a LOT to do to make up for it!
I collected Jadeite before Martha made it so popular again..
I still curse her for it to this day!
It used to be so inexpensive
and I just fell in love with the color and the sweet little designs on some of the sets.
SO anyway,
Mrs.Hen there in the background is going up on the shelf on display!

and
Lastly
A very
Happy Birthday
to
my little sister...
 How cute is that?

Have a Happy Monday everyone!

Thriftshare Monday....

Time for a little Thriftshare!

Last week was Spring break for us
the whole week was pretty much outings and visitors!

I thought I'd share a few things I had
not gotten to share that I found back in
the end of March.

These are two sets of floral
gift wrapping paper from the 50's?
They had never been opened
and include two or three small gift cards, and Dennison stickers!
I couldn't resist because they were in such excellent condition with everything included.
Definitely will be part of future ephemera projects!
I paid $4 for the set which is not necc. thrift
but a fair price I think.
This ledger book is dated 1897
It has some wonderful illustrations, some ledger entries, and some blank pages.
I love old handwriting.
You can tell when pen and dip ink were used...
The ledger was $3
Another to add to the ephemera pile...
This little card included these 6 "japanese umbrellas"
They are plastic
I'm guessing for cakes and cupcakes.
They were so adorable I couldn't believe no one had scooped them up yet
when I got to them for $1!
This check is dated 1917.
it was only .25 cents
I purchased it because the bank of Mill Creek WVA
is in the tiny town my husbands parents are from!
What a neat find!
I purchased a TON of antique postcards!
They were only .25 cents each!
I think I bought $11 or $14 dollars worth.
I lost count...
I have never seen them for .25 cents
always $1 each or more
especially ones this beautiful.
I definitely plan on using them in some journals and mixed media projects.
The one center bottom has a tiny envelope on the front.
Wonder what it was for?
I'll share some more of them soon.
This little celluloid baby was $2
I can't stay away from what I call the dimestore toys...
they used to be cheap and seem to rarely survive.
Even though I am probably the last generation that even knows
what dimestores were,
I loved all the tiny stuff I could get there.
I always had something in my little purse.
Do  you have any dimestore memories?
What were yours called?
We had Woolworths
Roses
and a few others I know I have forgotten.
I'd love for you to share some of those with me.
Leave me a comment..

Hope you had a lovely weekend!

Goodies in the Bag!

The last week has been so busy!
I managed to squeeze in some time for vintage goodness
thanks to
I am splitting up the finds I had into two posts
because there were so many!

I found this lovely tablecloth in some
colors I don't have yet for $6.00
These lovely tiny spools of tatting threads
were .25 cents each

This lovely little English lady
was only $3.00
I couldn't resist the colors and the flowers in the skirt
so many little precious elements to her!
 These two Vintage Hallmark
Party Games books
are full of pages of games, etc.
I loved the colors to the one on the right...
Lastly I always love a little Christmas!
These gummed stickers were $2.00
I'm not sure how many pages there are
but it is a nice thick little stack!
I also couldn't resist the Santa
I got 3 for $2.00!

and check out what everyone else found!

Marvelous Memorial day weekend finds!

Took a few days off from writing
to enjoy some time with family and friends
I went out on Friday to an Estate sale
that just happened to be near my home
and I felt like I scored so well
I didn't bother going to any others
the rest of the weekend!
When I walked in I knew I would find something great...
and i was surprised because I got there an hour late
and it had been advertised to have "antiques"
but it seemed like no one was buying...
sometimes I think people don't see potential in items
they just want them to be perfect or "look" valuable...
I was so excited to see these on the first table I went to....

An Argoflex and a Cadet to add to my vintage camera collection! The cadet was $1!
The Argoflex was $3!  I couldn't believe it!

Then I saw this awesome Brownie movie camera..
It still has the original box and manual...
$8

Shiny Happy People....
The design is so lovely and sleek
Of course I had to open it
and the insides are pristine
It has a small reel of film still inside!

On the table next to the cameras I found these
old diaper pins...
Funny when I was looking for these
before my son was born I couldn't find them
now I have found two sets in the last two months..
.50 cents
I need to figure out a clever use for them
any suggestions?

as I entered the kitchen I noticed this huge pile of old towels
and tablecloths from the 70's with mushrooms etc.
I still decided to take a peek
and underneath all that brown and avocado green
was this lovely bright tablecloth
$2!
I've never seen this pattern before

Isn't it just lovely?
After roaming through several other rooms I made my way to the
 garage...
It became obvious that the owner of this home was
a very loving woman
she appeared to save everything her children or nieces and nephews
had
baby clothes, toys, chalkboards, doll clothes, and school papers.
Which is when I noticed two large boxes of old papers and "junk" in the corner near the trash...
I peeked inside and noticed old school notebooks and report cards...
So I asked one of the girls helping out with the sale if she
would consider selling some to me
that I used things like those in my artwork...
I didn't ask for them because I feel like a family deserves an offer...
She laughed and said
"You know I thought I should keep some of those because I am an artist too!"
She gave me the whole box for $5
Which to me for the amazing amount of ephemera inside was a steal
SOLD!
This box must weigh 10 lbs...
I still haven't gone through the whole thing
but here are some of the top layer
Love the note from the teacher on the little booklet on top..
it says she did a great job on her little book!

an Aviation news booklet
old letters and service papers
It appears the couple owned a Service / Gas Station locally here some years ago
Old logbook with wages for employees
not much compared to now...neat to see
Old posters in great shape
advertising all sorts of things...
These glasses are Anchor Hocking freebies
probably 10 of these workbooks for writing....
The back section of all the booklets have a section of punch outs...
The section I stopped in was where I found this photo
A church directory photograph and order form
It was taken in 1983
A lot of times I wonder about the people and what they were like
so it was neat to see the people these items were a part of.
Do you think I should try and contact the family about the portraits?
I'm not sure since they were also selling a lot of black and white photos that
belonged to this couple.
Hope you had an amazing weekend and found some treasures...
head on over to ApronThriftGirl
and see what everyone else was up to!
Happy memorial day!

SuzieQ and Lisanne e-mail me your info since you are my winners from
my giveaway!
My mail link was disabled last week...
Congrats!

Thriftshare Monday....

Long weekend of feeling tired,
but a sinus infection couldn't keep me down.
Felt good enough to go out Mothers Day and do some junking...
What is it with old guys in thrift stores who think they know everything?
There are a few regulars I see at Estate sales and local shops
It's almost as if they aren't really interested in what they buy...
as long as it "looks old"
and they can be pretty pushy or rude...
I laugh at them usually and don't engage in much conversation with them...
because they are usually trying to get whatever you have
by talking it down
They just don't know who they are messing with when it comes to me!
My baby face makes them think I'm a newbie...
little do they know I have been trained by generations of
Knowledgeable
Crafty
Bartering
thrifty ladies!
SO
when one of these "Oldies" tried to get this board game from me
$2.98
Him ="Hey, that looks old"
Me="Yeah, it probably is"(acting like I don't care)
He comes over to inspect it in my hands!
Him="Probably missing most of the pieces"
Me="Actually it is in great shape and has all the original pieces,
there's another one in the back if you want to take a look"
Me= "That one is missing most of the pieces though, but it's old.
That's what you're interested in right?Old"
Him="Humpphh" (stinky smirk)
He= walks off leaving me in peace...
I'm usually such a friendly person but these guys just bug me
Don't get me wrong - I'm not just being this way to any old guy I meet at a sale
This "type" I just get their vibe right away..
Find #2
$4.00
Awesome Kodak camera for my collection...
Bellows are still great
Glass sight still there
Everything you'd want to be intact
There is even a roll of film inside!
But who knows if it can even be developed or if it has been exposed somehow..
It was raining and got wet on the table it was displayed on
I talked the guy into $4 from $10 since I was going to have to try and dry it out
and keep it from rusting...
Find#3
$2.00
Cigar box full of Ephemera
Postage stamps
Savings stamps and books for all kinds of things
from Silverware, China, and books..
I remember my mom and my great grandmother saving for things like this too.
Every now and then I see a promotion like this in our grocery
but they don't really seem like a deal anymore...
Hope you all had a great Mothers Day..
Head on over to Apron Thrift Girl to see all the other great finds!
Come back next week for my first giveaway...
Got some great items in the works..
Happy Monday!

Birthday Thriftshare.....

This Sunday was my birthday!
Woot Woot!
Finally got that IPOD to use those
awesome photo apps!
Other than birthday awesomeness in general
and a very close call with a tornado...
I did have time to find a few things
at a church sale
and a stop at The Goodwill
fashion was the theme for the weekend...
Found this great traditional Mexican style dress
$4.00
Lovely hand embroidery
Dilemma however...
Belt or no?
The thing with some of these dresses is they
look like sacks sometimes.
I think it would even look great with jeans...
see the two little birds?
love the little mushrooms...
The bunch of violets is faded and a bit chippy but that's why I like it...
$3.00
The large cameo is a piece of 1928 mother and child design
$2.00
The locket is real sterling/marcasite with mother of pearl
$3.95

Few yards of this cute fabric...
I'm thinking it is from the 70's
for .99  cents!
Would probably make a nice light blanket material...
any ideas?
So what did you find?
Head on over to ATG
to see what other great finds were out there...
Happy Monday!

Thriftshare.....

Feeling a bit crummy today...
Pollen is in full swing here now,
my kryptonite..
Of course I managed to come up with a few finds
before the pollen took me down...
Nifty Vogue sewing patterns for .50 cents a piece
Southern belle figurine $4.00
She was just so sweet I couldn't resist
I may be able to use her in some sort of mixed media and I may just leave her be
Photograph of a lovely lady
came with the original frame I paid more for her than I normally would
but I was just really drawn to her
$8.00
I like to call these "lost ancestors"

Original printing of a Tasha Tudor Christmas card
$1.75
I absolutely love Tasha Tudor
I think she was a wonderful illustrator
She inspired me a lot as a child when I didn't really know who she was
and then I rediscovered her as an adult
and I stopped feeling like I had to be this artist
who was either so realistic or so abstract to be good
That I could just be me in my artwork
She was an extremely interesting person as well
I like to think of her as the person Martha Stewart ripped off in some sort of ways
Only Martha could never be as authentic as Tasha
I have been planning a more in depth post with some of
my own illustrations that she inspired
coming soon.
So
What did you find this weekend?
head on over to
to see what other goodies were saved!

Thriftshare.....

Thriftshare Monday....

But before we get to the goodies
Lets celebrate Coach Shaka Smart being the kind of person
we want every mentor and teacher to be.
He turned down 2 million from NC State
to stay with VCU for 8 more years!
Yeah Coach!

Now on to the goodies...
I didn't go out much this weekend
because it was just so darn beautiful
We played hard
visited
worked in the yard
and napped...
But when I did manage to make 2 stops
I found some pretty good stuff!

Found these cute Salt and Pepper shakers
for $2.98
I know they are part of a popular pattern but the name escapes me
If anyone can remember leave me a comment
Found a box full of these cards
5 of each design
Part of a Virginia Tobacco Labels set
$2.95
I will use them in some collage work and probably for trade
at Art and Soul
Cutie little Button Box
$2.98
I'm not sure if it should have had a lid?
I may use it to fill with craft supplies
It might even make a cute Easter basket?
$2.90 Something seemed to be the number of the day
and lastly

Liam scored
this crazy dinosaur he absolutely loves
for $.99!
It looks like it was never used.
Just happened we found everything at
two local Children's Hospital Stores.
SO,
Head on over to Apron Thrift Girl
and see what everyone else found!
Happy Monday!
